This is the narrative of Chandra Gray, a young woman with an extraordinarily rare talent: she has the ability to summon creatures called "demons". These demons are not innately evil, but they will do the bidding of their summoner; in essence they are only as evil as the person controlling them happens to be. This is a story of adventure, of love, of betrayal of the worst possible sort, and of revenge. It is the story of Chandra's life as she becomes a summoner, and as her life afterwards, when she becomes known as the summoner Ji'anne.

Set in the future, humans have been forced to leave Earth and to colonize Mars for their own survival as Earth became uninhabitable. Damon Vance, a man with a degree in archaeology, which he was never able to use in the work force, is contacted by a company called AdvenTrek who is planning a mission to the humans' long-abandoned home world. Only a select group of individuals was chosen to be among those to travel "home", and the sacrifices Damon must make just to be in that group are almost too much for him to endure. It had long been his dream to travel back to Earth and uncover some of the mysteries lost there during the Exodus, and for that reason he lets nothing stand in his way to go on this mission. What he finds when he travels back to Earth, however, is not what anyone had anticipated, and the group's findings put everyone on the mission in terrible danger.

Castin always thought he was normal, with the exception of having been brought up by his aunt in the great forest known as the Thornhallow. What Castin did not know was that he never had been normal, and the reason for their hiding his entire life was that he bore the mark of the Magi. In the Kingdom of his birth, such a mark was cause for execution--regardless of age. As Castin nears his fifteenth birthday, soldiers invade the forest, hunting for him. He is of the age when his magic should manifest itself, and the soldiers want to end his existence before that can take place.

Brad and Kris have always been friends, and had always lived an otherwise normal life...That is until the day a spaceship crashed into their neighbor's yard and they were sent on the adventure of a lifetime. Brad tells the story from his point of view, as the two teenagers are whisked away from their home planet and into the middle of an intergalactic war between a group of freedom fighters led by Zorin Johnston--an "Earthling" like themselves--and Zylar, the Overlord that is secretly planning on taking over the entire Milky Way. Zylar's next target just happens to be Earth, and unless Zorin and his allies are able to do something about it, it will be an easy victory.
